As we noted in a previous post– Because of Britain`s strict gun ownership rights, knives and swords have become the weapon of choice for terrorists and criminals and knives being used in everyday crimes are fairly common. To fight this epidemic, sales of knives have been limited, online sales are being banned, age restrictions have been placed on knife purchases and more. Bins have been set up across the UK where people can discard unwanted knives and campaigns such as “Only Cowards Carry” are used to deter knife crime. (Links for all of those stories here)
This past week Judge Nic Madge went a step further and proposed an idea to help combat knife crime. He asks the question “…why we do need 8′ or 10′ kitchen knives with points? Butchers and fishmongers do, but how often, if at all, does a domestic chef use the point of an 8′ or 10′ knife? Rarely, if at all…” He goes on to say “I would urge all those with any role in relation to knives – manufacturers, shops, the police, local authorities, the government – to consider preventing the sale of long pointed knives, except in rare, defined, circumstances, and replacing such knives with rounded ends…” “It might even be that the police could organise a programme whereby the owners of kitchen knives, which have been properly and lawfully bought for culinary purposes, could be taken somewhere to be modified, with the points being ground down into rounded ends…”
It may be used as an argument that this is the nanny state in the UK protecting you from yourself, but in a country where the police state grips tighter and tighter around the people`s necks, the real desire to outlaw “weapons” can be questioned. They know how their citizens right to bear arms was used to shake the yolk of tyranny from them once before. Their is a reason why we have a Constitution in America protecting our rights, and their is a reason why certain totalitarian factions want to take it away.
